  • In the last decades, in particular, after the beginning of the works of Porto Maravilha, archaeological studies and excavations have brought to the fore the historical and cultural importance of the Port Region of Rio de Janeiro for the understanding of the Diaspora process And the formation of Brazilian society.

This tour will allow participants to visit the circuit and better understand the process of the African Diaspora and the formation of Brazilian society. The route lasts an average of two and a half hours with a route that starts from Largo de São Francisco da Prainha, passes through Pedra do Sal, rises Morro da Conceição and arrives at Suspended Garden of Valongo, from where you can see the Largo do Depósito .

In the tour we will also visit the Cais do Valongo “Valongo Docks” a Cultural Patrimony of Humanity by Unesco. In Pedro Ernesto Street, the last two stops are the José Bonifácio Cultural Center (CCJB) and the Cemetery of the New Blacks.

Each of the points indicated refers to a dimension of the lives of Africans and their descendants in the Port Region. The Pier of Valongo and the Empress represents the arrival in Brazil. The New Black Cemetery shows the unworthy treatment given to the remains of the people brought from the African continent. The Largo do Depósito was an area for the sale of slaves. The Suspended Garden of Valongo symbolizes the official history that sought to erase traces of the slave trade – around it were fattening houses and a vast trade in items related to slavery. The Pedra do Sal was a point of resistance, celebration and meeting. And the old school of the parish of Santa Rita, nowadays CCJB, refers to education and culture as instruments of liberation in our day.
